When we hear the words fashion and style, we often times use them interchangeably, blending the words together and assuming they mean the same thing. What are some words that come to your mind when you hear fashion and style? Probably clothes, trends, vogue, accessories, popular and fads, to name a few. Although all of these words fit in with fashion and style, there is a very distinct difference between the two.
The definition of fashion in the dictionary is the current style or custom as in dress or behavior. The definition of style is the way in which something is said or done. A quality of one’s imagination and individuality expressed in one’s actions or tastes. Fashion is the clothes, the latest trends and the popular fads of the moment. Style is the way you, the wearer, put the clothes together, moves in the clothes and carries yourself in the clothes.
Fashion is the garments and accessories themselves. Style is the way you apply and layer the clothing together, creating your own signature look and image.
Although fashion consists of the clothing and materials themselves, some clothes do look more stylish than others on the hanger merely by the cut, lines, and flair of the garment. However, this doesn’t mean that if you put the garments on you will automatically look stylish. The wearer, when put together impeccably from head to toe, brings the style to the clothing.
Think worldwide model Kate Moss. Yes, she is a fashion model, but she herself has style. The girl can’t help it…she just does! It isn’t the clothes she wears and models that brings out her unique style. It’s the way she wears the clothes. She possesses what is known as “an innate sense of style.†You can’t take it out of her. She has style, much like the “it†factor. This is the big difference between fashion styles.
If you need one word to make style come to life, that word is “symmetry.†Symmetry is when things are in balance, proportion and maintain an evenness. When a wall picture hangs crooked, it is out of symmetry. When hanging straight, the picture is symmetrical (to the wall). No matter how pretty the picture is if it hangs crooked, the photo doesn’t have the same panache as if you were viewing the picture hanging perfectly straight. The same holds true with fashion and style.
When you think fashion, wear clothes that you love and that you feel fit your image, then put those garments together in your own signature way, carry yourself with flair and class, and you’ll ooze style! Fashion and style is a complementary combination!
There is a distinct difference between fashion and styles. Be a fashion plate with your own signature style!
Oh you fabulous fashionista you!
