If it’s all in the eyes, and the eyes are the windows to our souls, why not draw from the magnetism, mystery and hard-to-read feline that is the cat? Cats very much beat to their own drum, and live their nine lives on their own terms, answering to none.
Everyone, even if you aren’t a cat lover, are drawn into cats’ eyes! Mysterious, mesmerizing and wise!
In the realm of fashion and cosmetics, the cat eye is a dramatic, classic look that often takes time and practice to master to perfection. The flick, or wing, is the toughest, but by far the most important, part of creating the perfect cat eye. With the help of eye shadow, mascara, and the infamous eyeliner, you can wear the alluring, appealing, coveted cat eye to sheer magnetic genius.
The cosmetic item that makes the distinct cat eye like no other is all in the eyeliner. Heavy, thick, usually black eyeliner, drawn out as the flick or the wing.
Eyeliner Fun Fact: Eyeliner is a cosmetic used to define the eyes. It is applied around the contours of the eye(s) to create a variety of aesthetic effects. Eyeliner was first used in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia as a dark black line around the eyes. As early as 10,000 BC, Egyptians and Mesopotamians wore various cosmetics, including eyeliner, not only for visual effect but to protect the skin from the desert sun. The characteristic of having heavily lined eyes has been frequently depicted in ancient Egyptian art.
The Cat Eye: Slinky, sultry, sensational!
How to Make the Dramatic Cat Eye with Eyeliner:
- Put on the eyeshadow of your choice, starting at the lash line and extending out to the crease of the eye.
- Find the right angle for your wing (the extended line made with eyeliner that gives a slimming, catlike appearance to the eye).
- Make a dot to indicate the tip of your wing on each eye.
- Draw a line connecting the dot to the outer corner of your eye.
- Draw another line connecting the dot to the middle of your upper lash line.
- Fill in the outline you have made.
- Clean up any mistakes with a pointed Q-tip.
- Draw a thin line along your upper lash line, beginning at the inside corner of your eye, near your tear duct.
- Thicken the line as it gets closer toward the outer corner of your eye.
- Extend the eyeliner past the corner of your eyes.
- Finish with heavy, thick black mascara for a look that is provocative, sexy and dramatic!
Cat Eye Tip: If you have a round eye try a thicker wing and line. If you prefer to extend your lash line and make your eyes look bigger, draw a curved line instead of a straight line. Make sure that the line is curving downward!

The perfect cat eye is all in the eyeliner!
Eyeliner Fun Fact: Eyeliner is commonly used in a daily makeup routine to define the eye and/or create the look of a wider or smaller eye. Eyeliner can be used as a tool to create various looks, as well as highlighting different features of the eyes. Eyeliner can be placed in various parts of the eye to create different looks with a winged eyeliner or tight lined at the waterline.
Tight lining is the use of eyeliner against the waterline and under the lashes of the upper lid, and above the lashes of the lower lid. Tight lining is a technique which makes the eyelashes appear to start father back on the eyelid, thus making them look longer. Gel eyeliner and a small angled brush work best to create this look.
Eyeliner can be drawn above upper lashes or below lower lashes, or both. Eyeliner’s primary purpose it is to make the lashes look lush and long, but it also draws attention to the eye, and can enhance or even change the eye’s shape.
Eyeliner Fun Fact: Eyeliner is available in a wide range of hues, from the common black (mega-dramatic), brown, gray, bright primary colors, pastels, frosty silvers, golds and glitter-flecked colors.
Slink yourself into any room in any town with a dramatic, mysterious cat eye wing in a daring black or brown!
Cat eyes are simply stunning!
In order to make the most exquisite, energizing cat eye, your eyeliner should be clearly defined. Save a smudged or lighter eyeliner for a more subtle, yet still beautiful, eye.
The Five Main Types of Eyeliner Available on the Market:
- Gel Eyeliner: A softer, gel liner.
- Kohl Eyeliner: A soft powder available in dark matte shades.
- Liquid Eyeliner: An opaque liquid that usually comes in a small bottle and is typically applied with a small sharp-tipped brush.
- Powder Based Eyeliner: Eyeliner that comes in a wood pencil.
- Wax Based Eyeliner: Pencils are softer pencils and contain waxes that ease application.
Whichever eyeliner you choose, whichever wing type you prefer, when drawing the perfect cat eyes, you’ll create a sultry purr!
Traditional wax based eyeliners are made from about 20 components. Stearyl heptanoate is found in most cosmetic eyeliner. Typical pigments include black iron oxide, as well as smaller amounts of titanium dioxide and Prussian blue.
