Traveling by airplane can be fun, especially if you’re heading off on a much-anticipated vacation. With flying comes preparation, such as buying your tickets, booking a hotel and packing. Eliminate the added stress of flying by ensuring you stay hydrated during your flight. Dehydration while traveling is caused by the low humidity level as the plane ascends to higher altitudes. The first step is to make sure you are properly hydrated before you board the airplane.
Ways to Stay Hydrated During a Flight
• Drink Water: Drink at least 250 ml of water every hour you are on the flight. By drinking small amounts frequently, your body will avoid dehydration. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water.
• Avoid Diuretic Drinks and Food: Most of us love alcohol and salty snacks while flying, but these can contribute to dehydration. If possible, snack on water-rich foods, such as fruits and soups. If you want to drink something other than water, fruit juices and soft drinks are a better choice than alcohol.
• Use Eye Drops: If your eyes begin to feel dry during a flight, use eye drops. Don’t rub them, as this will only make dry, irritated eyes feel worse.
• Use a Hydration Supplement: While water is sufficient to keep you hydrated, water doesn’t provide all of the electrolytes and energy needed to ensure that the low humidity on the airplane doesn’t affect you. Use a hydration supplement in tablet form and add it to your water while flying.
• Mist Your Face: Using a fine spray bottle filled with water, mist your face and moisturize your skin. This prevents you from having to make trips to the restroom to splash water on your face.
The secret to staying hydrated while flying is to use common sense. Drink plenty of water and eat healthy food to feel happy and energized upon landing. It is true that remaining hydrated during a long flight will help with jet lag and reduce or eliminate feelings of nausea, fatigue, headaches and a foggy head that often accompanies flying.
Drinking water at room temperature is best. Extremely cold water quenches thirst, and hot water helps battle congestion and a sore throat. Fly smart: drink water!
