‘TIS THE SEASON TO BE SEEN WEARING GREEN!

With the holidays being in full swing, houses are decorated, Christmas trees are trimmed and presents are being wrapped. As with all holidays, various colors are traditionally associated with the Christmas season, most notably green, red and gold. Have you ever wondered what those colors represent and how they originated? The Christmas colors get their meaning from the western/northern European traditions and customs, where Christmas being in the middle of winter is dark and cold.

Green: Evergreen plants, like Holly, Ivy and Mistletoe have been used for thousands of years to decorate and brighten up buildings during long winters. Green also reminds people that spring will come and that winter won’t last forever. Green is also the color of the ever adored Christmas Tree!

Red: The early use of red at Christmas were the apples on the paradise tree. They represented the fall of Adam and Eve in Christmas plays. Red is also the color of Holly berries.

Gold: Gold is the color of the sun and light – both important in the dark winter. Gold is also the color of fire that people used to keep warm. Gold was one of the presents brought to baby Jesus by one of the three wise men, and is the color used to show the star that the wise men followed to the manger.
