For those of you who have pierced ears, and adore wearing long, showy, gorgeous earrings, many times the earrings can be heavy and pull on the earlobes. 1. Vane – The length of the feather.
2. Rachis – The main shaft that runs down the center of the feather.
3. Barb – The individual branches that attach to the rachis (make up the majority of the feather).
4. Afterfeather – Loose fringes of branches that fluff out from the rachis.
5. Hollow Shaft, Calamus – At the base of the feather, the rachis expands to form the hollow tubular calamus, or quill.

Synthetic or artificial feathers look identical to real bird feathers, yet, they spare the birds.  Also, synthetic feathers can be made of all colors, single colors, or multi-colors.
