Crochet is a process of creating fabric by interlocking loops of yarn, thread or strands of other materials using a crochet hook. The name is derived from the French term crochet, meaning ‘small hook.’ These hooks are made of materials such as wood, metal or plastic and are manufactured commercially and produced in artisan workshops.

Crochet Fun Fact: The first known published instructions for crochet explicitly using that term to designate the craft in its present sense, appeared in the Dutch magazine Penelope in 1823. This includes a color plate showing five different style purses, of which three were intended to be crocheted with silk thread. The first is “simple open crochet”, the second starts in “semi-open form” and the third is “double-crochet stitches.”

Although crocheting is similar to knitting in the final appearance, each stitch in crochet is completed before proceeding with the next stitch, while knitting keeps a large number of stitches open at one time.

Crocheted clothing is light, airy, breezy and beautiful.

Basic Materials Required for Crochet:

1. The Crochet Hook – Hooks come in many sizes and materials. Sizing is categorized by the diameter of the hook’s shaft.
2. Yarn – Yarn for crochet is usually sold as balls or skeins, although it may be wound on spools or cones.

The Crochet Process:

Crocheted fabric is begun by placing a slip-knot loop on the hook, pulling another loop through the first loop, and repeating the process to create a chain of a suitable length. The chain is either turned and worked in rows, or joined to the beginning of the row with a slip stitch and worked in rounds. Rounds can also be created by working many stitches into a single loop. Stitches are made by pulling one or more loops through each loop of the chain. At any one time at the end of the stitch, there is only one loop left on the hook.

If you love the look of crochet but don’t want to dress in crochet from head-to-toe, how about crocheted heels or a crocheted handbag? A touch of crochet goes a long way.

Five Types of Basic Crochet Stitches:

1. Chain Stitch – The basic beginning stitch.
2. Slip Stitch – Used to join a chain stitch to form a ring.
3. Single Crochet Stitch – Easiest stitch to master.
4. Half Double Crochet Stitch – An ‘in-between’ stitch.
5. Double Crochet Stitch – An unlimited use stitch with many uses.

More advanced stitches are often combinations of these five basic crochet stitches. More advanced stitches include the Shell Stitch, V Stitch, Spike Stitch, Afghan Stitch, Butterfly Stitch, Popcorn Stitch, Cluster Stitch and Crocodile Stitch.

In recent fashion we’ve seen a revival of interest in crocheted clothing, as well as in do it yourself crochet fashions. There have been great strides in improvement of the quality and varieties of yarn, and there are many new pattern books with modern patterns being printed. Most yarn stores offer crochet lessons, in addition to the traditional knitting classes.

In addition to making a comeback on the streets, crochet clothing has experienced a revival on the catwalk as well. Also, crochet has been utilized many times by designers on the reality show Project Runway. Websites such as Etsy and Ravelry have made it easier for individual hobbyists to sell and distribute their patterns or projects across the Internet.

Crochet Fun Fact: A hairpin loom is often used to create lacy and long crochet stitches, known as hairpin lace. While this is not in itself a hook, it is a device used in conjunction with a crochet hook to produce stitches.
