Halter tops and halter dresses (referred to as halternecks) are perfect garments to wear in the lazy, hazy, crazy and oh so hot days of summer!
A halterneck is a style of women’s clothing straps that run from the front of the garment around the back of the neck, and leaves most of the back uncovered. The name comes from livestock halters.
The halter style is used with swimsuits, which maximizes sun tan exposure on the back and minimizes tan lines. The halter style also looks cool, chic and gorgeous on tops and dresses, especially sun dresses.

Halter Top Fun Fact: A halter top is a type of sleeveless shirt similar to a tank top, but with straps being tied behind the neck. In another style of halter top, there is only one narrow strap behind the neck and a narrow strap behind the middle of the back, so that it is mostly backless. This design resembles many bikini tops, although it covers the chest more and may cover some or all of the abdomen at the front.
Neckline Fun Fact: The neckline is the top edge of a garment that surrounds the neck, especially the front view. Neckline also refers to the overall line between all the layers of clothing and the neck and shoulders of a person, ignoring the unseen garment. For each item of clothing worn above the waist, the neckline is primarily a style line and may be a boundary for further shaping of the upper edge of a garment with a collar, cowl, darts or pleats.

Halter Dress and Halter Top Fashion Tip: Most halter tops and halter dresses are made to wear braless, or come with a built in/sewn in bra. If you choose to wear a bra with a halterneck, the bra is generally strapless to avoid exposing the bra straps. However, as with all fashion, some people choose to wear bras with halternecks either in the same color or a different color as the garment to create a style effect.
With longer hair, the neck strap of a halterneck can be covered by the wearer’s hair, leaving the impression that nothing is holding up the dress or the top. With shorter hair, or for a look that is classy and sassy, wearing the hair in a bun or swept off the shoulders accentuates the stunning halter neckline!

In the last few decades in the United States, “gown” has lost its general meaning of a woman’s garment in favor of the word “dress”.
