Hats are so much more than merely pretty head pieces. Hats are stylish, flamboyant, perfect for getting you through a bad hair day, and they can protect your face from the sun, wind and rain. Hats are also the cherry on the sundae of a glorious, haute couture outfit! Hats are different, original, unique and not the everyday norm in most peoples’ day-to-day dress lives, so when you see a great hat covering someone’s head, you notice both the head cover and the person underneath the hat! Immediately!
The head covering known as the hat can be worn for protection against weather and elements, for ceremonial and religious purposes, for safety, and for the purpose of this blog post, as pure fashion fun and grandeur!

Haute couture is a term reserved for the highest echelon of artistic creation in the world of fashion. The term haute couture means “high sewing” or “high dressmaking.” It implies custom, artistic, one of a kind garments that are designed and fitted for one specific individual.
As far as hats, fancy, large, eye candy hats definitely look haute couture!

One of the most famous London hatters is James Lock & Co of St. James Street. In the late 20th century, museums credited London-based David Shilling with reinventing hats worldwide. Philip Treacy OBE is an award-winning Irish milliner whose hats have been commissioned by top designers. In North America, the well-known cowboy hat manufacturer Stetson made the head gear for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Texas Rangers.
Many types of hats are available for practicality, and then there are hats that are merely made to be admired and looked at! Decorative hats at that!

Some popular types of fashion hats include beanies, straw hats, wide-brimmed hats. and wedding hats.  A hat consists of four main parts:

  1. Crown – The portion of the hat the covers the top of the head.
  2. Peak or Visor – A still projection at the front of the hat, to shade or shield the eyes from sun and rain.
  3. Brim – A stiff material from the bottom of the hat’s crown that runs horizontally all around the circumference of the hat.
  4. Sweatband or Headband – A ribbon or band that runs around the bottom of the torso of the hat.

Yes, hats can be all that! And then some! And then more!

Hat Fun Fact: Hat sizes are determined by measuring the circumference of a person’s head about 1/2″ above the ears. Felt hats and crocheted hats will stretch for a custom fit. Some hats, like hard hats and baseball caps, are adjustable. There are some hats that run small, medium and large.
There is definitely a hat for every head, and a hat for every outfit!

Hat Fun Fact: In the first half of the 19th century, women wore bonnets that gradually became larger, decorated with ribbons, flowers, feathers, beads, etc. By the end of the century, many other styles of hats were introduced, among them hats with wide brims and flat crowns (the flower pot and the toque). By the middle of the 1920s, when women began to cut their hair short, hats became popular that hugged the head like a helmut!
Hugging the head or highlighting the head, there is no denying that many hats look and feel high fashion!

The tradition of wearing hats to horse racing events began at the Royal Ascot in Britain, which maintains a strict dress code. All guests in the Royal Enclosure must wear a hat. This tradition was adopted at other horse racing events, such as the Kentucky Derby in the United States.
