High Waisted Jeans Get a Bad Rap!

What words come to mind when you hear or think of high waisted jeans? Dull, dowdy, old?

Well, how about replacing those words with darling, dazzling, delightful?

High waisted jeans can be worn in all of their splendor if highlighted correctly, meaning worn with the right tops, shoes and accessories.

High waisted jeans are absolutely adorable!

So, why does this style of jean get such a bad rap (an unfair decision or opinion made against someone/something that is not deserved)?

As most everyone knows, jeans are trousers/pants made from denim or dungaree cloth. Jeans originated from “blue jeans” and were invented by Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss in 1873. Jeans, already a common staple of dress for cowboys, became popular among teenagers and young adults starting in the 1950s. Today, jeans have become a pop culture phenomenon and are here to stay as an article of casual or dressy dress around the world.

Jeans have become a huge fashion moneymaker, bringing in  billions of dollars annually in the United States alone. Can we say “designer jeans!”

Most cuts of jeans rest on your hips, or somewhere in the hip area. With high waisted jeans, the top of the pants fit snuggly around the waist. High waisted jeans come in all colors, and can be found in both the straight legged, skinny jean category and also the flaired, bell bottom leg. Both cuts provide a stylish, though different, appearance.

I feel that high waisted jeans look their best when:

Straight legged:  Worn with a form fitted, long sleeved T-shirt or a loose blouse, tucked in to the pants. I particularly like a soft blouse with ruffles or trim on the sleeves, providing a more feminine look. Dangling bracelets, noticeable rings and large earrings accentuate this head turning style.

Flaired legged:  Worn with a blouse or a spaghetti strap top, tucked in to the pants. The flaired or bell bottom leg is dressier than the straight leg, so a silk or chiffon blouse wears extremely well with this cut. As with the straight legged, high waisted jeans, accessorize the outfit with fun, eye-catching jewelry to rock the pretty look.

As far as footwear goes, since the high waisted jean is a fancier cut jean than hip hugger jeans, I prefer a heeled shoe to add glamour to the overall appearance. With the straight legged jean, either a nice, closed toe pump or a high heeled ankle boot screams fashion! With the flaired legged jean, I like a classy, open toe platform shoe.

If you are particularly confident and daring, this platform shoe, with high waisted, flaired denim jeans, a frilly, dressy blouse and the right jewelry makes you shine, literally, from head to toe! If this type of shoe is worn with the bell bottom jean, it creates a beautiful visual when the cuff of the pants drapes over the shoe, only exposing a portion of the platform sole and the platform heel.

Another plus of the high waisted jean, in addition to the luscious look, is that the pants actually create a slimming effect for the wearer. With the high waist, the leg appears elongated, as there is more fabric than when the top of the pants stops at the hips. Then, if you add a high heel, you give off an even more statuesque, statelier appearance.

High waisted jeans are fahionable, fun and fantastic, whether dressy or casual!

So, the next time that you are going to an event, or even to the office, knock them out in a knock out pair of high waisted jeans!

Every pair of hip hugging jeans in the area will look at you and say, “WOW! When I grow up, I want to be a pair of high waisted jeans!”
